People who love to cook can't cook without it. An all-purpose seasoning born behind the butcher counter at D&S Meats — and now available wherever great cooking happens.
Big Stevie's is named after Steve Mandic, who grew up in Butte, Montana — a tough, hard-working town that takes its food seriously. Steve's family ran D&S Meats, an old-school, full-service butcher shop that leased space inside Len Erickson's neighborhood grocery store, Len's Foods.
When Len retired in 1980, the Mandic family bought the grocery business and took over the whole operation. For years, one of the shop's most beloved traditions was seasoning cuts of meat for customers — free of charge — using Steve's own homemade recipe. Nobody thought much about commercializing it. It was just something they did because it made the food better.
When the store was sold in 1995, something unexpected happened: friends and neighbors started calling, asking if Steve could still make the seasoning for them. It was too good to let disappear. A friend named Zena Beth McGlashan stepped up — she made the first labels and pushed Steve to start selling it for real.
That's how Big Stevie's Spice Company was born. Not from a marketing plan, but from neighbors who just didn't want to give up the best seasoning they'd ever tasted.
